It is indeed a pleasure to write about the inception of an historically, transformative and might I add, creative and critical thinking freedom empowerment academy.
Let me take you back to 2023. I had just left another "Here We Go Again" Lower Merion School Board meeting. I remember shaking my head, frustrated, doing what I always do to keep my mind calm and my emotions in check… doodling. And in my frustration, one thought kept looping: Nothing accomplished. Again. I'm wasting my time.
The next morning, I was listening to Urban View on SiriusXM with the late Joe Madison and Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. as they discussed Black church schools. Schools designed to open eyes that had been kept in the dark about our ancestry, our archives, our true place in American history! World history! A history that wasn't lost. It was taken.
So I started digging. I made calls. I had conversations. And eventually, I was invited to a Freedom School in Philadelphia. What I witnessed became a profound and poignant experience. I observed young people of color standing tall in who they were. Not confused. Not diminished. Proud. Gifted. Motivated.
I thought: if this is possible in Philadelphia, why not here? Why not on the Main Line? Why not in our own community? So, bit by bit, step by step, with people who shared this vision, we began to build it. Our freedom school. Our Freedom Empowerment Academy. The picture is being painted right now and it is colorful, and it is bold, and it is ours. Come and join us. Add your color to it. I promise you, you'll love what we're building.
