Rooted & Rising: Celebrating Black Joy, Genius, and Justice

SATURDAYS, 10-12
October 4 - December 20
(No Class Nov. 29)

HAVERFORD COLLEGE CAMPUS, STOKES HALL

Africa & the Diaspora: Our Stories, Our Strength is a dynamic 10-week course held Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, running October 4 to December 13, 2025 (no class on November 29 for Thanksgiving). A special culminating event will take place on Saturday, December 20 at the Haverford College auditorium.

This intergenerational learning experience explores the richness of African and diasporic history through three core themes:

  • Genius: From ancient African innovations to modern Black inventors, artists, and scientists.

  • Justice: Resistance movements across time, including slave rebellions and Black Lives Matter.

  • Joy: Celebrating Black culture through music, art, and community traditions.

Participants will build skills in research, creative expression, and public speaking. The course concludes with a vibrant Culmination Showcase on December 20, featuring student-led projects, performances, and exhibits that reflect the course’s themes and personal discoveries.
